Why You Really Need a Water Softener

Do you ever wonder if you’re being secretly sabotaged by a ghost living in your home and breaking your stuff? It sounds insane, but how else do you explain all the broken appliances and suspiciously high energy bills?

Before you hire a paranormal investigator or attempt to perform a convoluted seance involving candles, a crystal ball, and an ouija board, consider that your recent troubles are the result of hard water.

What Is Hard Water?

Hard water is rich in certain minerals, like calcium and magnesium. This happens because as water travels through rocks and soil, it collects minerals. Depending on where you live, your water might contain more minerals than other areas. Although these minerals aren’t necessarily harmful to your health, they can wreak havoc on your plumbing, appliances, and even your skin and hair.

Hard water can be problematic because it prevents soap from lathering, dries out your skin and hair, and creates build-up in your pipes and appliances. The build-up in the form of calcium deposits (also known as scaling) leads to shorter-lasting appliances and higher energy bills since appliances have to work twice as hard to push water past mineral deposits.

How Soft Water Makes Your Life Easier

A water softener can improve home life by mitigating mineral buildup, thereby eliminating all those annoying issues caused by hard water. Soft water supports cleaner dishes, softer laundry, and silkier hair. It can also boost energy efficiency and extend the life of your appliances. Because your plumbing and appliances won’t have to work so hard, they’ll not only last longer but also use less energy over time.

How Does a Water Softener Work?

Water softeners use a resin tank filled with tiny beads designed to trap hard minerals. These beads are coated in negatively charged sodium ions. As water flows through the tank, positively charged calcium and magnesium ions are attracted to the resin beads and release sodium ions into the water. This process softens your water.

Once the resin beads become saturated with calcium and magnesium, the system flushes them out with salt water. This removes the trapped minerals and recharges the beads with fresh sodium ions. This cycle then repeats itself, ensuring you always have a steady flow of soft water.
