When To Call A Heating Contractor

November 9th, 2017

Our home heating systems usually serve us well for years. Basic maintenance, coupled with correct installation, ensures extended trouble-free service times. But systems of all types can eventually fail. If your heating system seems to be on the blink, here are some tips to consider before calling a contractor.

Is the connection there?

A safety system such as a fuse or a circuit breaker may need attention. Check that, using all the required safety measures. A new fuse or a flip of the breaker may return your system to full function.

Is the switch on?

There may be a separate heating system switch. Check to be sure that it is on. They sometimes appear as an ordinary switch, but may have both the wall plate and toggle red in color. Flip it on and see if your heating system kicks in.

Is there a reset button?

Look for a reset button and give it a try. Allow a few minutes for the system to become active. In the case of an oil fueled heating system, don’t keep pushing the reset button repeatedly. That can overload the system with fuel and create a dangerous situation. Wait a while and see if the system starts. If not, it could be time to get it checked by a professional.

Is there fuel?

If there is a meter, check that to see if there’s been a cutoff or other problem. If your fuel is stored in a tank or other type of reservoir, make sure the supply is adequate. You’ll also want to check to be sure that the pilot light is on.

Is the thermostat set right?

Take a look at the thermostat. Is it on? Try turning the thermostat up several degrees. Give the system time to activate. If your heat does come on, be sure to reset the thermostat to the correct setting.

There’s a good chance that one of these simple steps will get you out of the problem. But if not, it’s probably time to consider contacting a qualified contractor to get your heating system up and running.
