What to Expect When a Plumber Replaces Your Bathroom Sink Faucet

n

Replacing your bathroom faucet

n

Whether you are looking to replace your bathroom faucet because it is in poor condition, or simply trying to upgrade your look, this is not a job to take lightly. While it is a project that many people do choose to complete on their own, hiring a professional plumber is usually the best option. However, it is still important to understand the process that the plumber will be using when replacing your bathroom sink faucet. This begins with selecting your replacement sink faucet.

n

Picking Out Your Sink Faucet

n

It is important to understand the size of sink faucet that you need based on your current sink type.

n

The different faucet types are:

n

    n

  • Single hole
  • n

  • 4-inch triple holes – faucet with 3 part fixture with the outer fixtures 4 inches from the center (may be designed in one piece but requires 3 hole)
  • n

  • 8-inch triple holes – faucet with 3 part fixture with the outer fixtures 8 inches from the center (may be designed in one piece but requires 3 holes)
  • n

n

You may also have the option of using a single hole faucet in place of a 4-inch triple hole

n

Setting Up For the Replacement

n

It is at this point that your plumber would lay out the tools he or she will required to remove your old bathroom sink faucet.

n

Some tools that may be used are:

n

    n

  • Basin wrench
  • n

  • Crescent wrench
  • n

  • Plumbers tape
  • n

n

The plumber will also have to set up the parts included with the faucet for proper installation of the new fixtures.

n

Removing the Old Faucet

n

First, the water must be shut off to the sink faucet being replaced via the shutoff valve located below the sink. Otherwise, when the old faucet is removed water will spray out, which could cause quite a mess. Then the water line extensions will be removed from the faucet, at which point they will need to be drained into a bucket. Once they are drained they are removed from the shutoff valve.

n

After the water line extensions are removed, the actual fixtures will be the next step. The existing fixtures are usually secured to the sink with nuts and washers. The plumber must remove all existing hardware in order to be able to remove the old faucet fixtures. As the old fixtures are being lifted out they may be hard to get loose, as years of corrosion or previously used adhesive material may be stubborn.

n

Installing Your New Bathroom Sink Faucet

n

At this point your new fixtures are going to be placed. The plumber will place and secure the new fixture, the actual installation process varying depending on your faucet type (single, 4 inch triple hole, or 8 inch triple hole). Then the water line extensions will be reinstalled (or new ones will be installed if that was part of your desired change), and secured to the water shutoff valves. It is at this point that the water will be turned back on to check how the new faucet is functioning. Your plumber may let your water run for a few minutes to ensure the fixtures are working correctly and there are no leaks.
