Every year, the day after Thanksgiving is the busiest day in the plumbing industry. With extra guests, heavy cooking, and garbage disposals working overtime, the holiday puts serious stress on your home's plumbing system.
The Top Thanksgiving Plumbing Problems
The three most common emergency calls we get during Thanksgiving week are kitchen drain clogs from grease and food waste, garbage disposal failures from overloading, and toilet clogs or backups from increased usage. All three are preventable with a little preparation.
How to Prevent Kitchen Drain Disasters
Never pour cooking grease, oil, or fat down the drain. Instead, pour it into a disposable container and let it solidify before tossing in the trash. Run cold water for 15-20 seconds before and after using the garbage disposal. Avoid putting turkey bones, potato peels, celery, or large quantities of any food down the disposal at once.
Protect Your Toilets
With extra guests comes extra toilet usage. Place a small waste basket in each bathroom so guests have an alternative to flushing items that shouldn't go down the toilet. If you know your home has an older sewer line, consider having it inspected before the holiday.
