Garbage Disposal Not Working?

November 9th, 2017

When the garbage disposal goes bad, what steps can you take to deal with the problem yourself?

A. Connection:

If your garbage disposal doesn’t do anything when you turn it on, not even make a noise, you may have a connection issue. Find the switch, if any, and make sure it is on. Locate the breaker and check to see it isn’t tripped. Make sure there isn’t a blown fuse.

B. Jam:

If your disposal makes noise but doesn’t seem to be turning, it may be jammed. Likely you will find a hex socket at the bottom of your disposal. Try to turn it manually, using the wrench provided with the unit, or any proper sized hex wrench. Often you can free a jam by turning back and forth by hand.

C. Reset:

Look on the bottom of the disposal. You should find a red reset button. Try pressing that and checking the operation of your disposal. Sometimes that will fix it.

D. Blades Broken:

Your unit may turn but not grind. It is likely that you have a broken blade problem in that case. It may be time to replace that disposal.

E. Leaks:

A leak from the disposal itself may indicate a problem that requires replacement of the disposal. It would be a good idea to find the leak and be sure it isn’t in your plumbing before suspecting the disposal unit.

When you have done these things, let’s hope that you are back in business. If not, better call in a contractor and replace that garbage disposal.
