Garbage Disposal Gone Bad?

November 9th, 2017

What do you do when the garbage disposal won’t dispose of the garbage?

An easy check and fix is to check the reset button. In most cases it’s on the bottom of the disposal, and often it is red. Push the button, then try the disposal again.

Sometimes a disposal will jam. For this eventuality, a hex socket is often provided on the bottom of the unit. You can turn the disposal manually, using a hex wrench. That will often free the jam.

When the disposal does nothing and makes no noise when turned on, there may be a connection problem. Make sure the switch is on and that the breakers and fuses aren’t tripped or blown.

When there is leakage you should trace the problem to determine if it is your plumbing or your disposal. A disposal that is leaking may need to be replaced rather than repaired.

Broken blades can cause your unit to operate but not process the waste properly. That is usually a replacement indicator. Or there may be backup water that just won’t go through. That may indicate a plumbing problem that you’ll need to get checked out by a professional.

Hopefully one of these things got your disposal grinding again. But if none of these worked, you probably need to consider calling in a qualified professional to check out your garbage disposal problem.
