Fixing a clogged drain

November 9th, 2017

Here are several homeowner methods to try before calling on a plumber to clear a clogged drain. These methods do not use chemicals.

A. Look for wider issues:

A plugged up vent system or failed pipes beyond your home may be causing your drains to run slowly. You may need help from a qualified professional in order to determine the exact problem.

B. Try the easy steps first:

Remove drain covers and clean away any debris, such as hair or kitchen waste. That simple step might get everything running again. If that doesn’t do the trick, you may need to get going with the plunger. Use a flat-faced sink plunger, not the collared toilet model. Give it a gradual start, then a more vigorous effort. After the plunger, the next step will be the snake. A sink auger can be purchase at a reasonable price. Some are hand cranked and some connect to an electric drill.

C. Use the plumber’s friend:

The plunger is the first thing you want to try on a clogged toilet. Use the extended collar type. Start with rather gentle efforts, then get more serious.

D. Get after the clog with a snake:

The toilet auger will have some sort protective covering to avoid damage to the porcelain of the toilet. Since most toilet clogs are near or in the toilet itself, the auger should be able to reach the plug. Sometimes there are access points past the toilet. You may be able to reach on of those and try the auger there.

Most home clogs will be cured by one of these methods. But if not, a plumber to clear your clogged drain is just a phone call away.
