The Best Air Conditioners for Your Southern California Home

· By Norwalk/La Mirada Plumbing

Southern California's climate — hot, dry summers and mild winters — creates specific demands on your cooling system. Here's how to choose the right AC for your home.

Central Air Conditioning

Central air remains the most popular choice for homes with existing ductwork. Modern units with 16+ SEER ratings provide excellent efficiency for SoCal's long cooling season. If your home already has ducts, replacing a central AC unit is typically the most cost-effective option at $4,000 to $8,000 installed.

Ductless Mini-Splits

Mini-splits are ideal for homes without ductwork, room additions, converted garages, or areas where central air doesn't reach well. They offer zone-by-zone temperature control and very high efficiency (up to 30+ SEER). A single-zone mini-split runs $3,000 to $5,000 installed; multi-zone systems cost $6,000 to $15,000+.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps provide both cooling and heating from a single unit. In SoCal's mild climate, they're an excellent choice — they operate efficiently even in our coolest winter months. Modern heat pumps can replace both your AC and furnace, simplifying your system and potentially qualifying for utility rebates.

What SEER Rating Do You Need?

California's minimum SEER requirement is 15 for split systems. For SoCal's heavy cooling demands, we recommend 16+ SEER for the best balance of upfront cost and long-term savings. Going from 14 to 18 SEER can save $200-400 per year on cooling costs.
