An Air Conditioner Cleaning and Maintenance

The best time to service an air conditioner is before its actual use. That’s why regular maintenance and cleaning are extremely important.

n

An air conditioner’s filters, coils, and fins need systematic maintenance for the unit to function effectively for years.

n

Air Conditioner Filters

n

To ensure the efficiency of your air conditioner you must regularly clean or change its filters. Clogged, dirty filters obstruct normal airflow, significantly reducing the system’s efficiency.

n

Clean or replace your air conditioning filters every month or two during the cooling season. Filters require more frequent maintenance if the AC is in constant use, is exposed to dusty conditions, or you have fur-bearing pets at home.

n

Air Conditioner Coils

n

The evaporator coil and condenser coil of AC collect dirt over months and years of service. A clean filter prevents the evaporator coil from dirtying. However, eventually the evaporator coil still collects dirt, which blocks airflow and reduces its ability to absorb heat. Check your evaporator coil every year and clean it as necessary in order to prevent this from happening.

n

Outdoor condenser coils also accumulate dirt if the outdoor environment is dusty or if there is greenery in the vicinity.

n

Coil Fins

n

The aluminum fins on evaporator and condenser coils bend easily and can become the reason for blocked airflow through the coil. Buy a tool called a “fin comb” that will comb these fins back into their original state.

n

Condensate Drains

n

Clogged drain channels prevent an AC unit from decreasing humidity, and the excess moisture may stain walls or carpet. Pass a stiff wire through the unit’s drain channels from time to time to avoid this problem.

n

Window Seals for Air Conditioners in Rooms

n

At the beginning of each hot season, check the seal between the AC and the window frame to ensure that it is connected with the unit’s metal case. Moisture can ruin this seal, letting cool air leave your house.

Hiring a Professional

n

When your AC requires not just consistent maintenance, hire a professional service specialist. An experienced technician will find and repair any problems in your air conditioning system.
