Troubleshooting your Heating System

No doubt, if you wake up in the middle of the night and your house is cold, you know that you have a heating system problem.  Emergency heating repairs are a challenge and they often show up at the worst possible time!  There are some basic things you can do at home to troubleshoot your furnace but nearly every time you may be required to contact a licensed heating contractor.

There are some things you should do before contacting a heating contractor in to look at your furnace

  • Check your thermostat – Make sure that someone in the home or office has not inadvertently turned down the thermostat;
  • n

  • Check your pilot – For oil and gas heaters, check your pilot and make sure it is still lit.  If you are uncertain as to how to do this, contact a heating contractor;
  • n

  • Switches – If you have a switch that controls your furnace (typically looks like a light switch) check and make sure it’s turned on.

There are many things that can cause issues with your heating system.  Before you contact a licensed heating contractor to your home or your office, make sure that you are not overlooking a simple problem that you could easily fix yourself.
