Attempts at air conditioning have been going on for a long time. Efforts date back at least to the Romans in their prime. The Persians made some pretty impressive efforts toward achieving indoor comfort as well. Before air-conditioned vehicles became available, humans venturing out-of-doors adapted their clothing to reduce heat and promote comfort. In baking deserts, people adopted enveloping robes, to keep the sun off the skin and keep the person under the robes at least less hot. And they still do that today in desert countries. In the hot, humid tropics, people often chose to wear almost no clothing, with perhaps a head covering. They still do that, too, in the hot, humid tropics. In the more conservatively clothed communities where most of us live, I guess we’re still going to need air conditioners.
