Spring AC Tuneup

Spring is the time to start thinking about air conditioning. If it already seems like summer where you live, then it is high time to start making sure your AC is ready for the heat, before the heat gets here. At the very least you should turn it on and check to make sure it’s working. But wait, before you do that, here are a few simple do-it-yourself  projects that will save you money and help keep you cool.

One: Keep it clean.

Clean up around your air conditioning unit. Whether debris has blown in there, or you have perhaps stacked bags or boxes, or maybe lawn furniture or such nearby, your AC needs some room. Free-flowing air is needed by your air conditioner in order to function properly. In addition to objects, check for branches or other plant growth. All shrubs and plants should be trimmed back away from your AC unit.

Two: Fix the filters.

You can hardly do yourself or your AC a bigger favor than to change or clean the filters. Dirty filters cut down performance and cost your money. If badly neglected, they can cause serious problems with your air conditioning system. So take care of that easy and important task. It’s an easy step toward summertime comfort.

Three: Clean the drain.
After you have the filters cleaned and the space around the AC unit cleared, you can run the air conditioner a while to be sure it is working well. While it’s running, you can check to be sure the condensation drain is flowing. If not, you need to clear it, if you know how, or get someone to have a look. A plugged drain can lead to serious and seriously expensive water damage inside your home.

While it is a good thing to do some home maintenance yourself, it is not a good thing to get injured. So be careful when working with that AC system or any other electrical system. If you don’t know how to clear the drain or clean around the coils, then don’t do it. Get yourself a pro to come out and give you a spring tuneup. From a polite distance, you can observe and learn. The pro will know just what to do to get your air conditioning system ready for summer time.
