We the human race used to be mainly interested in hunting and gathering, they tell us, and so not much interested in plumbing. If your life consists mostly of a long walk, and nights huddled by the campfire, cringing before the onslaught of the saber-cat and the dire wolf, waste management is low on the list of priorities. But when you start to stay in one place, raising families and establishing households, the problem becomes noticeable. So we did something, starting with throwing the accumulation into the streets for the rain to wash away, eventually. After time we figured out how to make pipes and run our waste water into the nearest river, lake, or ocean. Now we have sewerage treatment systems, though we still have room to improve in keeping our plumbing pointed away from the river.

Let us hope that the future of the sanitary sewer system leads to more concern for the environment and the planet, without sacrificing comfort and convenience. We don’t want to go back to using the streets as sewer systems; but let’s keep our waste out of the Tiber as well. And fortunately we don’t have to sacrifice comfort. We now have excellent plumbing, and reliable, highly-qualified local plumbing contractors to call upon to install our plumbing systems and keep them functioning properly.
