Long ago we didn’t have plumbers. Because, of course, we didn’t have plumbing. No doubt we needed plumbing, and wished for it while wandering to the back of the cave. But what could we do? We were hunter-gatherers, grunting by the fire and gesturing to each other with mastodon bones. Eventually we tamed some wild creatures and saved some seeds to plant, which caused us to settle down, build cities, and need plumbing badly. We responded with sewer systems of a sort, and eventually quite good ones, too.

A lot of other civilizations that may not get the press they deserve had good early sewer handling systems, like the Chinese and the Egyptians. Some of the societies and cities that we might tend to think of when considering older yet civilized societies considered the streets to be the sewer system, at least until they learned better.. Rome eventually did develop a sewer system, with some interesting public toilet arrangements. They were of the mind, as we have been until only recently, that flushing the residue into the Tiber was an acceptable means of dealing with it.

Let’s hope we’ve learned better. We now have modern waste-water treatment plants, sewers to connect us to them, and plumbing to make our lives cleaner and more convenient. And fortunately, we have plumbers too. Our local qualified plumbing contractors are masters of the craft, and can install the most advanced plumbing facilities and keep them functioning as they should.
