A typical system works like this: A sediment pre-filter takes out the heavy material, including particulate matter from the outright evil and dangerous to merely annoying and filter-clogging. A second carbon filter removes chemicals and contaminates that make water nasty and might also damage the RO filter membrane, reducing its effectiveness. Then comes the reverse osmosis filter.
