A home heating system is one of the most important parts of our home utilities. Most heating systems provide long-lasting reliable usage. But if your system lets you down, here are some quick fixes to try before calling in the heating contractor.
n
One: Check the electrical connection.
n
Check fuses and breakers. Use the common sense safety practices, of course. Remember that if the safety system activates time after time, there is a problem that will need attention.
n
Two: Check the switch.
n
Locate the switch for the heating system. They are sometimes red to make them stand out. Check to be sure that the switch is on.
n
Three: Try the reset button.
n
There should be a reset button visible on your system. Try it. If you have an oil fueled system, don’t keep pushing the button. That could inject a dangerous overload of fuel into the system. Wait a bit and see if the reset gets you back in business.
n
Four: Check the fuel.
n
Make sure that there is an adequate supply of fuel. If you are on an externally metered system, check to be sure that everything is on and working properly.
n
Five: Check the thermostat.
n
Verify that the thermostat is in the on position. You might want to turn the heat up a bit, then wait a reasonable time for the system to activate. If the heat gets going, remember to turn the dial back to your economical comfort level.
n
One of these quick fixes may well restart your home heating process. If not, it’s time to call in a heating contractor to get your home heating system back functioning again.
