Whether we humans are inside or out, we humans always want to keep cool in summer. We’ve been figuring out mechanical systems for cooling since at least the old Roman times. The Persians had an advanced culture and figured out some good home cooling techniques as well. Now we have air-conditioned vehicles to transport us about. But before we made those inventions, we had to choose clothing that would help us keep cool. In desert climates, people adopted robes. Robes at least keep the sun off the skin. They will keep the person under the robes at least a little less hot. People still do that today in the desert lands. In the tropics, choosing to wear little or even no clothing was a popular way to keep cool. And that choice is still very popular. We still get bare to the greatest advisable extent, when in the hot, humid tropics. But most of the time we live in a world of greater restrictions, and business casual is about as relaxed as we get on a work day. So until we figure out a way to be on vacation all the time, looks like we’re still going to need air conditioners.
