AC then and now:

We humans have been working on developing home cooling systems for centuries. Our efforts date back at least to the Roman times. The highly civilized Persians made good progress toward achieving indoor comfort. Before our vehicles had climate control settings, people venturing outside needed to adapt their clothing to promote comfort. In desert climates, people adopted robes, to keep the person under the robes at least less hot. But theirs is a dry heat, of course. It must work, because they still do that today in desert countries. In the sticky tropics, many people chose to wear little or no clothing. And that must work, too, because we still do that in the hot, humid tropics, if we get a chance. But in the more conservatively dressed circles where most of us live and work, we won’t be donning robes or shedding our clothing either. In that case, I guess we’re still going to need air conditioners.
